Residents near data centers report infrasound, frequencies below what standard decibel meters detect. The meter reads compliant. The body registers something else. County inspectors are sent to check noise levels. The equipment is not designed for the frequency range. The harm is real. The official record shows nothing.

Unauthorized water connections. Grid costs assigned to non-consenting states. Sound that the measurement tools miss by design.

More than 140 local groups have blocked or delayed over $60 billion in data center projects in the past year. At least 12 US states have filed moratorium bills this legislative cycle. Virginia, which hosts the largest data center cluster in the world, has seen public support for new facilities drop from 69% in 2023 to 35% now.

This is not anti-technology sentiment.

It is communities discovering that industrial-scale infrastructure was approved through governance systems designed for residential oversight, and deciding they have had enough.

The companies extracting the resources are not paying for the infrastructure those resources require. The cost distributes to the public. The discovery only happens when a citizen files a public records request.

That mechanism is not new. It does not resolve on its own.
